Botox, Face Lifts No. 1 Cosmetic Procedures Chosen by Men
It’s not their pecks or stomach that men target most often when deciding to undergo cosmetic surgery, it’s their face. Facial enhancement procedures, such as face lifts, Botox and eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), are at the top of men’s cosmetic surgery wish lists, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Cleveland men are less self-conscious about their bodies than they are about their faces, says noted Cleveland plastic surgeon Dr. Vicente Poblete. Whether men meet on the job or socially, the first thing they do is extend their hand for a shake and look each other in the eye. When taking each other’s measure, facial appearance is as important as eye contact, particularly in the business world. It’s our face that gives us away as we age. A face that is wrinkled, lined and droopy gives the appearance of being old, tired and washed up. A face that is unwrinkled, smooth and taut gives the appearance of competence, youth and energy.
Today, men are living longer and remaining healthy, fit and active far longer than men of previous generations. It’s now common for men to live into their late 80s and early 90s. Retirement no longer starts at 65. Men are routinely working into their 70s and 80s and many are launching new careers after retirement. Medical advancements in joint replacement and cardiac care, ready access to fitness venues and the national emphasis on healthier eating habits are allowing men to stay physically active well into their senior years. Even divorce is playing a role in men’s quest for youth, pushing many men past their 40s and 50s back onto the dating scene. To compete against peers who may be years or even decades younger, Cleveland men who want to look as young as they feel are turning to plastic surgery.
