Divorce Drives ‘Vengeance Plastic Surgery’
When love falters and marriages crumble, devastated spouses are frequently turning to cosmetic surgery for what licensed Cleveland plastic surgeons are calling vengeance plastic surgery. Hurt by the rejection or unfaithfulness of their spouse, patients are scheduling Cleveland cosmetic surgery procedures during or after their divorce as a kind of payback. Patient motivations range from a desire to feel better about their physical appearance as they re-enter the dating scene to a vengeful need to show departing spouses what they’re missing.
The nationwide phenomenon has led one New York City plastic surgeon to develop a divorce package that, like popular Mommy Makeovers, bundles commonly-requested cosmetic surgery procedures. Interestingly, the divorce package is attracting a fair number of men. In a December 12, 2010 Washington Post article, Dr. Stephen Greenberg estimated that 30% of his divorce package patients are men.
Extreme weight loss, a common occurrence during marital break-ups, motivated one 49-year-old patient to schedule a round of Restylane injections after her 17-year marriage hit the rocks. Restylane is a facial filler used by Cleveland cosmetic surgeons to minimize wrinkles and age lines.
“I lost a lot of weight, just from the stress of it all,” Ann Soriano of New York City told the Washington Post. “And if you lose weight because you’re eating well and exercising, it looks good. If you lose weight because somebody walks out on you, you don’t look so good.”
Soriano told the Post the results of the Restalyne injections gave her such a positive boost that she is now considering liposuction to trim her tummy.
Cosmetic surgery can help restore confidence after divorce, but Cleveland plastic surgeons concerned about patients making life-changing decisions while they are emotionally distraught recommend a thorough discussion with a licensed cosmetic surgeon before scheduling procedures.
