Breast Augmentation Isn’t Just About Big Boobs!

For the past 3 years, breast augmentation surgery has been the cosmetic surgery procedure most requested by American women -- but not for the reason you think. Despite the fact that few women desire over-sized centerfold breasts, that’s the unfortunate stereotype that most people associate with the words “breast augmentation,” the often joked about “boob job.” Contrary to popular belief, most women do not undergo breast augmentation surgery for the sole purpose of gaining larger breasts. Women most often choose breast augmentation for the following reasons:

  1. Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery Breast AugmentationTo make clothing will fit properly. Designers add extra fullness to women’s blouses, dresses and jackets to accommodate her breasts. For clothes to fit properly, a woman’s breasts must line up correctly with clothing darts and not dangle pendulously below the bust line. This is a frequent problem after pregnancy or breast feeding, significant weight loss or during aging.
  2. To achieve a more symmetrically balanced body shape. Our bodies are not perfectly made. Imperfections and asymmetrical differences are common, although usually minor. However, when one breast is noticeably larger or smaller than the other or sits higher or lower than the other, a woman’s body can look and feel uncomfortably unbalanced.
  3. To reconstruct breasts after breast cancer. The fight against breast cancer often requires mastectomy, the removed of the patient’s breast. Reconstructive breast surgery can recreate the shape and feel of the missing breast, restoring a cancer survivor’s sense of femininity.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation procedures increased by 2% last year. Cleveland cosmetic surgeons expect breast augmentation surgeries to continue rising over the next few years, driven largely by the still active Baby Boomer generation. More accepting of cosmetic surgery than previous generations, Baby Boomers view cosmetic surgery as one more tool in the makeup bag. They want to look as young as they feel and are turning to cosmetic procedures to accomplish their goals.
