Popularity of Cleveland Cosmetic Surgery Is Increasing

Cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. have increased 155% since 1997 when the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) first started keeping records. In the past year, ASAPS statistics showed a remarkable jump of 9% in the number of major surgical cosmetic procedures performed compared to 2009 when economic uncertainty caused many people to delay complex surgical procedures like face lifts and tummy tucks in favor of nonsurgical options such as Botox Cosmetic and other facial fillers. With 9.5 million surgical and nonsurgical procedures performed last year, 2010 marked the end of economic belt-tightening and the return of high demand for life-enhancing cosmetic surgery procedures.

Cosmetic surgery on the rise Breast augmentation topped the charts as the most popular female cosmetic surgery procedure in 2010, followed by liposuction, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks and breast reduction. Women underwent nearly 8.6 million cosmetic surgery procedures last year or 92% of the total. While cosmetic surgery procedures performed on women outnumbered those performed on men by 9 to 1, the number of men who underwent plastic surgery procedures last year showed a significant increase. More than 750,000 cosmetic surgery procedures were performed on men in 2010, 8% of the total. Men favored liposuction, followed by rhinoplasty (nose surgery), eyelid surgery, breast reduction and ear surgery.

Nonsurgical cosmetic procedures continued to be popular with both Cleveland women and men; although the total number of procedures decreased somewhat from 2009 to 2010, largely because the improving economy allowed people who had been putting off major cosmetic surgery to schedule those procedures. Botox Cosmetic and Dysport, both commonly used to erase wrinkles, worry lines, laugh lines and crow’s feet, were the most popular non-invasive procedures with both women and men.

Cleveland plastic surgeons expect the demand for cosmetic surgery to continue increasing, driven primarily by active baby boomers who want to look as young as they feel.
