What Parents Should Consider Before Approving Teen Cosmetic Surgery

The interest in cosmetic surgery procedures is increasing among young women and men in their teens and early 20s. The majority of the cosmetic procedures sought by young people are nonsurgical; however, a significant number of cosmetic ear, nose and breast enhancement surgeries are being performed on children, teens and young adults. While these procedures are often performed to correct a congenital defect, children are increasingly undergoing Cleveland cosmetic surgery to improve self-esteem or in response to bullying.

Cleveland cosmetic surgeonIf your teen is asking about cosmetic surgery or you believe cosmetic surgery could benefit your child, plastic surgeons recommend that parents discuss the matter with a board-certified plastic surgeon and consider the following:

  • Has the feature reached full physical development? A child’s body does not usually reach full development until the early to mid-teen years for girls and mid-teens to early 20s for boys; however individual features may achieve full growth sooner. For example, ear development is complete around age 5 or 6. Cleveland cosmetic surgery should usually be delayed until growth is complete. Premature surgery can affect development and future growth can negate results.
  • Is the child emotionally mature enough to undergo cosmetic surgery? It is important that the child understand what can and cannot be accomplished by the procedure. The child should be emotionally mature enough to accept a realistic outcome.
  • Is the cosmetic surgeon qualified? Parents should choose an experienced, board-certified cosmetic surgeon. Memberships in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery indicate the surgeon’s commitment to clinical excellence, medical ethics and continuing education. Also look for affiliation with a respected local hospital.
  • How will potential risks, limitations and recovery time affect your child? Parents and their teens should understand the medical risks, as well as limitations that may affect the child’s activities during recovery.
