Fitness Trends for 2013: Back to the Basics

Return to basics 

A back-to-basics exercise routine reminiscent of gym class calisthenics, body-weight training features push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, squats, dips, planks, jumping jacks, lunges, sprints and other basic exercises, as well as more demanding combination exercises such as squat thrusts and handstand pushups. Rather than weights or equipment, body-weight training uses your own body weight to provide resistance. Top 10 fitness trends 

Indicative of its recent rise to popularity, this is the first year body-weight training has made the American College of Sports Medicine’s list of Top 10 Fitness Trends for 2013, jumping from nowhere into the No. 3 spot and pushing Pilates, spinning and stability balls out of the top tier. In the College’s annual survey the only two fitness trends more popular than body-weight training were strength training, holding onto the No. 2 slot for the second year, and the perennial preference for accredited health programs and certified fitness professionals, which captured the No. 1 spot for the sixth straight year!

  • fitness programs for older adults,
  • personal training,
  • functional fitness,
  • core training, and
  • group personal training.
