Moisturizing is Key for Winter Skin Care of Both Sexes
Winter skin care is as important for men as it is for women. While there’s little locker room stigma attached to moisturizing these days, most men still tend to be less conscious of their skin care needs than women. Fortunately, many of the moisturizing products women use are equally appropriate for men. Stocking the bathroom with fragrance-free or unisex-scented skin-quenchers can encourage your man to join you in protecting skin from winter’s drying effects.
What causes dry skin?
During the winter months, dry air wicks moisture away from the skin’s surface, leaving your skin more prone to flaking, inflammation and eczema. Though they feel good on a cold morning, hot showers actually exacerbate the drying process by stripping away the skin’s natural oils. Use of strong soaps, acne creams and retinoids can make the problem worse. Even your morning cup of coffee, after-dinner drink or some of the medications you take may contribute to skin dehydration.
To minimize winter’s drying effects, follow these tips:
- Switch to a creamy body wash and facial cleanser. Dove has introduced a great line of skin care and cleansing products for men that are easy on the skin.
- Wash your face twice a day. Men may want to look for a cleanser that contains alpha-hydroxy acid which promotes exfoliation and can help minimize razor bumps.
- Apply moisturizer twice a day to hydrate the skin. To increase absorption, apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp from the shower.
- Encourage your skin to stay hydrated by placing a humidifier in your bedroom and running it while you sleep.
Professional skin care from a licensed aesthetician may be needed to help rehydrate and repair skin damaged by winter dryness.
