Maintaining the soft, clear skin we are born with becomes more challenging with each passing year. Age, diet, sun exposure, pollution and smoking can take a toll on our skin. Protecting and nurturing our skin during our adult years may take some effort, but youll love the results.
For healthy, luminous skin, follow these skin care tips:
- Hydrate. The key to healthy looking skin is hydration. Drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated and healthy. Water also helps to flush skin-damaging toxins from your body.
- Sunscreen. Always put on a broad spectrum sunscreen before going outdoors. Ultraviolet light from the sun can both burn the surface of the skin and cause deep skin damage that can lead to lines and wrinkles. Either use a moisturizer or foundation that contains sunscreen or apply sunscreen under your makeup. Products with a minimum SPF 15 provide adequate protection for most people, but you might want to choose a product with SPF 30 if you are fair skinned or plan to spend the day outdoors. And dont forget to protect your lips!
- Diet. Eating foods rich in antioxidants and certain vitamins and minerals can help keep your skin healthy and contribute to your overall health. According to WebMD, foods rich in vitamins C and E and selenium may protect skin from wrinkle-causing sun damage. Vitamin C also aids tissue growth and repair. Vitamin A (retinol) promotes healthy cell growth, while vitamin E helps regulate that growth. Together they form a potent anti-aging team. Certain antioxidants and enzymes also help protect cells from the free-radical damage caused by air-borne pollutants. In general, a diet rich in deeply colored fruits and vegetables will provide your skin with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.
